Description
Cochise and Zero G boots are hybrid (Cochise) or pure touring (Zero G) models that require specialized soles for walking and compatibility with freerando and touring bindings.
Features
Sole Type: They are generally provided as a replacement or interchangeable kit, including separate toe and heel pads.
-
Main Functionality: They allow the boots to be used with Low Tech (pin) bindings or MNC (Multi-Norm Compatible) bindings.
Composition: They are often made of Skywalk or Vibram (rubber) for increased grip and durability compared to traditional rigid alpine soles (ISO 5355). Toe Piece: The Low Tech element
The toe piece is the key element that allows compatibility with touring bindings.
Tech Inserts (DYN Certified Inserts): The toe piece integrates Dynafit certified metal inserts (often called Low Tech Inserts). These inserts are the anchor points for the pins of touring bindings, allowing pivoting for walking and locking for descending.
Norm Compliance: These soles may comply with ISO 9523 (the standard for touring boots) or ISO 23223 (GripWalk), depending on the specific boot model (see point 4 below).
Heel Piece: Grip and Safety
The heel piece is essential for grip when walking and safety when skiing.
Grip Material: Made of profiled rubber (Skywalk or Vibram) to provide excellent traction and increased safety when walking on snow or icy terrain.
Ergonomic Shape: Often with a curved or rocker (rocking) profile to improve the natural roll of the foot and comfort during walking or approach.
Key Distinctions (GripWalk vs. Low Tech Touring Soles)
-
It is important to note that Tecnica often offers two types of soles (or integrated versions) for the Cochise and Zero G models:
| Sole Type | ISO Standard | Key Features | Recent Models (Example) |
| GripWalk (GW) with DYN Inserts | ISO 23223 | The current hybrid standard. Curved shape for walking, non-slip rubber, but compatible with Alpine GW bindings and Pin bindings. | Cochise 120 DYN GW |
| Low Tech Touring Soles | ISO 9523 | More traditional touring sole, often entirely rubber (Vibram or Skywalk) and with a more pronounced profile. Compatible only with Pin or MNC/Frame bindings. | Older Cochise DYN or Zero G Guide models |
