Description

The Salomon Outside Vario is a versatilepole designed for off-piste cross-country skiing and Nordic touring. Its main feature is its telescopic system, which allows you to adjust the length according to the terrain or technique used.

Here are the technical details of this pole:

1. Telescopic construction (Vario)

The Vario system allows you to adjust the size of the pole (generally between 110 cm and 155 cm).

  • Uphill: The pole is shortened for better thrust.

  • Downhill: The pole can be lengthened for greater stability.

  • In deep snow: Adjust to prevent the arm from working too high.

  • Sharing: Its adjustable range means that several people of different sizes can use the same pair.

2. Technical features

  • Aluminum tube: Uses a robust aluminum alloy (often 6061 or 7075 series) to resist bending and twisting in crusty snow or between trees.

  • Backcountry basket (washer): Equipped with a large-diameter articulated washer. This prevents it from sinking deep into unpacked snow, unlike the small baskets on piste skis.

  • Handle and strap:

    • The handle is often made of foam or bi-material for a firm grip even with thick gloves.

    • The strap is wide to distribute pressure evenly over the wrist on long tours.

  • Steel/Carbide tip: A solid tip for biting into ice or hard-packed snow.

3. Why choose this model?

This pole is not designed for speed or competition (too heavy and less rigid than a carbon pole), but it is unbeatable for :

  1. Spring skiing: when the snow changes texture as the day goes by.

  2. Off-piste: Its sturdiness enables it to withstand abrupt pushes on uneven terrain.

  3. Scalability: Perfect for a skier who mixes classic on-piste with forest outings.
