Description

The Tecton 13 is a hybrid touring ski binding manufactured by the Swiss brand Fritschi.

It is extremely popular with Freeride and Freerando (Free Touring) skiers because it offers an excellent compromise between the lightness needed for the ascent and the power/safety of an alpine binding for the descent.

1. Key Technical Features

Specification Value Role
Type Hybrid Binding (Pin Toe / Alpine Heel) Combines lightness at the front and downhill performance at the back.
DIN Range / Z Value 5 – 13 Suitable for intermediate, advanced, and expert skiers.
Weight (per unit) Approx. 550 g (without ski brake) Ranked among the lightest hybrid bindings on the market.
Compatibility Tech Boots only (with Low Tech inserts) Does not work with standard alpine boots (except for certain models equipped with the GripWalk sole if the binding is WTR/MNC certified).

2. Safety and Downhill Performance

The Tecton 13 distinguishes itself from most insert bindings by its safety and power transmission design:

  • Toe Piece with Lateral Release:

    • The lateral release (boot release to the side) occurs at the toe piece (where forces concentrate in the event of leg torsion), like on an alpine binding.

    • It offers an elasticity of 13 mm per side, which is very high for an insert binding and helps prevent unintended releases.

  • Fixed Alpine Heel Piece with Rail:

    • This is the most important feature. The heel piece is fixed (it does not rotate) and presses the boot heel against a friction plate, ensuring direct and constant power transmission to the ski, as in an alpine binding.

    • Additional "Power Rails" engage in the Tech inserts of the boot heel, eliminating play and maximizing lateral stability.

  • Adjustable Vertical and Horizontal Release:

    • The DIN is fully adjustable on both the toe and heel pieces, offering reliable and verifiable safety (often certified TÜV DIN/ISO 13992 - touring standard).

3. Ease of Use for Ascents (Touring)

  • Walk Mode: Switching from ski mode to walk mode is easily done without having to remove the boot from the binding.

  • Climbing Aids: It has several riser levels (often 7° and 12°), easy to handle with a ski pole.

  • Emergency release during ascent: A mechanism allows the toe piece to release in case of a fall or emergency in walk mode, which is a unique and highly appreciated safety feature.

In summary, the Fritschi Tecton 13 is the binding for the skier who wants to ascend with relative lightness but who does not want to compromise on power, stability, and especially alpine safety on the descent.
