Description
The Marker Kingpin 13 is a legendary touring ski binding, considered a benchmark in the hybrid/freeride touring binding category. It is designed for skiers who prioritize downhill performance and safety without wanting to sacrifice uphill efficiency.
It is the direct competitor to the Fritschi Tecton 13.
Features
| Feature | Specification | Role |
| Type | Hybrid binding (Pin Toe / Alpine Heel) | Combines the lightness of a pin binding at the front with the safety and rigidity of an alpine binding at the rear. |
| DIN Range / Z Value | 6.0 – 13.0 | Intended for advanced to expert skiers or aggressive skiers of medium to heavy weight. |
| Weight (per unit) | Approximately 715 g (with ski brake) | Light for a binding in this category, but heavier than a purely light touring binding. |
| Compatibility | Tech boots only (with Low Tech inserts) | Requires touring ski boots (ISO 9523) or GripWalk boots with inserts. |
Key Technologies
The Kingpin stands out with its unique heel piece that makes it so effective downhill:
-
Alpine Heel Piece (Kingpin Heel):
Unlike traditional pin bindings, the Kingpin uses an alpine-style heel piece with large contact points with the boot sole.
These XXL Power Transmitters ensure direct and loss-free power transmission to the ski, offering edge control and responsiveness comparable to an alpine binding.
Vertical and lateral release is individually adjustable, providing a more reliable and secure release function, certified according to ISO standards.
-
ISI (Intuitive Step In) Toe Piece:
This is the light and technical part. It has been improved to make stepping in easier.
The toe piece is reinforced with carbon for increased rigidity and reduced weight.
It includes stepping-in stops that help align the boot tip, making entry quick and easy, even in the snow.
The most recent model often uses a two-spring toe piece (similar to the Alpinist) for weight savings without sacrificing performance.
-
Ergonomic Climbing Aids:
It offers three climbing positions (generally 0°, 7°, and 13°), very easy to handle with a ski pole.
Elastomer pads are integrated to absorb impact and reduce clacking noise while walking.
In Short
The Marker Kingpin 13 is an excellent option for the freeride/touring skier who wants to ascend efficiently but refuses to compromise safety and the alpine ski feel on the descent. It is one of the most solid choices on the market for wide backcountry skis and for hard-charging skiers.
